Special Education is the education of students in a way that addresses the students' individual differences and needs.. It is frequently described as a process involving the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapting equipment and materials, accessible settings, and other interventions designed to help learners with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and community than would be available if the student were only given access to a typical classroom education.
Special Education online degree programs often feature the designing of Individualized Education Programs (IEP), alternative forms of ability assessment, performance goals and indicators, and intervention strategies. They typically also emphasize historical and current educational research studies on learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disabilities, and other physical and cognitive impairments. Opportunities are provided to apply concepts, theories, and research throughout the program. Assignments within each course guide students through observational and practice-based experiences.
As awareness of some learners' special needs and of the potential for self-sufficiency have increased, the demand for skilled Special Education professionals is strong. The Special Education specialization enables graduates to respond to students' diverse abilities and styles as they provide equitable learning.
